I've encountered the same issue running VMware Workstation 8.0.6.35970 on a Win7 Enterprise 64-Bit host (Win7 Pro 32-Bit guest). Tried un-install/re-install the USB Controller in VMware as well as the USB Controller in the host Device Manager. My host PC is an HP EliteBook 9470 with Intel i5-3317U CPU. I will keep working and checking/reporting back.
