"vm.vmx" is not a valid virtual machine configuration file

My VM crashed the other day, and now I can't open it. I did some searching online, and found that this often means that the data in the vmx file was erased. I checked and sure enough, there was nothing in the file. A little further research said that I create a new VM from an existing machine, which would save my data. I have tried to follow the instructions, but am using the free version of VM Player, which doesn't seem to allow for creating a VM from an existing file.

If the free version does allow this, I would be very grateful if someone could post the steps. If not, is there another way to recover the file? I saw one thread that suggested creating another VM and then copying the vmx file, but I wonder how identical the two machines need to be for this to work. There was also a warning that this was an unconventional solution. Not knowing what all is in the vmx file, I don't want to rush into this and destroy my data, much of which is not recoverable. Yup, I should have made a backup--too late now.

Thank you for any insights.
