We are begining to plan a migration from vSphere 4.1 to 5.1. We have two datacenters several miles apart connected by a 10 gig link. In our current setup, we have one virtual datacenter that includes the esx hosts from both sites. Both vmotion and storage vmotion work well over the 10 gig link. HA and DRS are not currently configured, but will be included in the new setup. I am looking for the pros and cons of continuing to have one virtual datacenter, versus having two, one for each physical site that includes only the servers at that location, i.e., buildling1-vdc, would include bldg1-esx1,bldg1-esx2, etc, and building2-vdc, would include building2-esx1, bldg2-esx2, etc. We would be able to preserve the ip address ranges at each site in the event of a link disruption. As I understand it, we would not be able to vmotion or set up HA and DRS between the two virtual datacenters. Does any one else have a multiple location virtual infrastructure connected by high speed links? If you do, how many virtual datcenters do you have and how are they configured?
