Re: New to ESXi, need advice on initial configuration

Hello and welcome the forums! Unfortunately, the answer to all of your questions is: it depends! Let me try to provide some information and documentation that should be helpful.

  • the IP for management of the ESXi could be in the same VLAN of the guest OS, or should it be in the same managment VLAN of the Switches, AP's, etc?
Either would work, but I would not personally recommend either approach. Putting the ESXi management on the same VLAN as the guest OS could be a security issue and many organizations separate network management from systems management. I always create a separate VLAN just for ESXi management + vCenter Server if you really want to.
  • Should I use E1000 as the NIC for the guest OS?
Depends. E1000 is usually a solid choice and should work without issue. VMXNET3 may work better, but requires a driver provided in VMware Tools. I personally try to go with VMXNET3 whenever possible. Some links that may help:
  • What SCSI controller, LSI Logic SAS?
Solid choice. PVSCSI would be only other consideration, but I would stick with LSI Logic SAS for now. Some links that may help (some old):
  • What type of disk should I use when creating the VM for the Win 2012, eager zeroed or lazy zero?

Either will work it just depends on what features and performance you care about. Lazy will create the disk the fastest, but eager will likely perform slightly better. Some links that may help:
